Since much of the infrastructure of China was put in rather recently, the big cities do look more developed. Simply put, there hasn’t been enough time yet for their roads to develop potholes.

Someone here mentioned the subways, but again, the above principle applies. By the way, personally I like those old, creaky subways in NYC, Boston and Chicago.

I’ll keep this simple. This country has grown so fast in the past 10 years, and it’s getting better and better. In general the big cities in mainland China are NOT cleaner.. however some areas are cleaner than others.. With that said, they do have much better public transportation than the US, and many cities are becoming more and more international. The malls and buildings are more modern, bigger, brighter, bolder and interesting to explore. The economy is much more stable than back home in the US. With APP’s like WeChat, Taobao, and Meituan this country is extremely convenient. The housing however is an interesting subject. Everyone lives in giant apartment areas that they call “gardens”.

You can find nice ones with a Gym and a Pool but it’s going to cost you serious money. The good news is that Rent is relatively cheap in this country. I mean super cheap, (I live in Chongqing and have a pretty upscale pad next to a fancy mall and pay around $350 a month)

Yes, the US economic boom was from 1920 to 1970 and many building and cities were constructed at that time. The booming period in China is from 1980 up to now. Certainly, US cities look older and Chinese cities are more modern.

I have been to Beijing, Xi’an and Shanghai. I grew up in the greater New York City metro area.

I used to think NYC was the human center of the world and the ultimate city. When I went to Shanghai and Beijing, I realized that the Chinese cities look like they’re a century in the future, and dwarf those in the US.

As for the exaggeration of so called “ghost cities”, those are simply large empty developments at the edge of hugely populated cities in China. You can see ghost neighborhoods in Newark and Detroit where the race riots of the 60s took place.

Chinese cities are much cleaner than most cities in the US. I saw human shits (stools) in downtowns of LA and Long Beach, I saw rats in dirty/smelly subway in NYC. It’s shameful that those cities can’t do anything about it . A country can sent human to space but can’t do anything about human shits on the streets and homeless people ?

It depends on the city and the location. China’s cities look that way because the government controls everything which means the government dictates how everything will look.

U.S. cities are based on income. The rich cities have more taxes and therefore can spend more on upkeep and expansion. The poor cities dont. Look at San Francisco, a beautiful city with lots of rich people and lots of taxes.

Many Chinese cities, or parts of them, are much newer than US cities, New Chinese developments can use modern design ideas and modern materials and technology. So it shouldn’t be a surprise that you see more shiny steel and glass high-rises fully wired up for broadband with water and energy saving features in China, than in cities largely built 50–100 years ago in the USA.
