Nostalgia

When I was young,

Nostalgia was a tiny, tiny stamp,

Me on this side,

Mother was on the other side.

When I grew up,

Nostalgia was a narrow boat ticket,

Me on this side,

Bride on the other side.

But later on,

Nostalgia was a low grave，

Me on the outside,

Mother on the inside.

And at present,

Nostalgia becomes a shallow strait,

Me on this side

Mainland on the other side.

乡愁

小时候

乡愁是一枚小小的邮票

我在这头

母亲在那头

长大后

乡愁是一张窄窄的船票

我在这头

新娘在那头

后来啊

乡愁是一方矮矮的坟墓

我在外头

母亲在里头

而现在

乡愁是一枚浅浅的海峡

我在这头

大陆在那头

相信这首诗大家都非常熟悉，2017年12月14日这首诗的作者，著名“乡愁大诗人”余光中先生在台湾去世。本期我们一起再好好欣赏这经典佳作，共同缅怀他老人家！

He was a poet(诗人) known for the nostalgia(思乡之情)he describe in his poems. Now, it’s time for us to express our nostalgia for this great write.

On Dec 14, famous Chinese poet Yu Guangzhong passed away in Taiwan, the Xinhua News Agency reported.

Born in 1928 in Nanjing, Jiangsu, Yu and his family moved to Taiwan in the 1950s. he lived and worked there until his death.

Nostalgia《乡愁》 is Yu’s masterpiece(杰作) in which he express his homesickness for the Chinese mainland(大陆) when he was in Taiwan.

Published(出版) in1971, the poem remains highly popular among Chinese speakers worldwide. Even those who know little about literature(文学) are familiar with lines from the poem. The poem is included in Chinese high school textbooks.

Besides his achievements in poetry, Yu was also a successful essay(散文) write, critic (评论家) and translator.

He once translated English poet Siegfried Sassoon’s poem In Me, Past, Present, Future Meet into Chinese. It is regarded as an accurate and powerful translation, in which the most famous line is “ 心有猛虎，细嗅蔷薇 ” for “ In me the tiger sniffs the rose” .

Yu spent his whole life writing. “The reason why I stick to writing till today comes down to my passion for the Chinese language, ” he once said in a 2015 interview with People’s Daily. He then added that this passion was strengthened(加强) by his love for his mother and his motherland.
