《小公主》出版于1905年，那时正是工业迅猛发展的时期，所以人们认为钱比什么都重要，觉得强大的国家主宰其他国家 ， 并将其作为殖民地是理所应当的 。尤其是英国，此时正是它的鼎盛时期，在全球各地都有殖民地，所以被称为“日不落帝国” 。在这部小说里也描写了英国人在其殖民地印度做生意的状况，他们成为有钱人之后 ， 便随意驱使印度人 。
西方一直流行着这样一个故事模式
曾经幸福的人突然变得不幸，在经受了各种艰难困苦之后重新获得幸福，白雪公主的故事便是这一模式的体现，弗朗西丝·霍奇森·伯内特也是受到了这一原型的启发而创作了《小公主》 。

内容简介
一个英国女孩萨拉，刚生下来母亲就去世，父亲在印度经营煤矿，十分富有 。在萨拉七岁的时候，被父亲送到寄宿学校读书 。父亲给她提供了优越的物质条件，她在寄宿学校里过着公主般的生活 。但是，随着父亲的突然离世，她在学校的生活与地位也一落千丈 ， 受尽校长的折磨 。但萨拉依旧保持着乐观向上的心态，最终苦尽甘来，继承遗产 。

She was such a little girl that one did not expect to see such a look on her*** all face. It would have been an old look for a child of twelve, and Sara Crewe was only seven. The fact was, however, that she was always dreaming and thinking odd things and could not herself remember any time when she had not been thinking things about grown-up people and the world they belonged to. She felt as if she had lived a long, long time.

She stepped to the door of the little back parlor and spoke; and the next minute a girl came out and followed her behind the counter. And actually it was the beggar-child, clean and neatly clothed, and looking as if she had not been hungry for a long time. She looked shy, but she had a nice face, now that she was no longer a savage, and the wild look had gone from her eyes. She knew Sara in an instant, and stood and looked at her as if she could never look enough.
