【Linguistics】

It is a style of language that is appropriate in situations where there is some social distance between the speakers, e.g. between an employee and a boss. Sometimes, it’s called “register”.

In many languages, there are important and noticeable differences in the form, vocabulary and grammar (e.g. Japanese and French).

In English it is less obvious, subtler and therefore does not usually concern learners or teachers so much. Many coursebooks ignore it altogether. It is often a feature of EAP, or Business English courses.

Formulaic Language

【Linguistics】

It refers to sequences of language that contain two or more words that work as a “single unit”. They are also called “lexical chunks”. They include collocations, phrasal verbs, idioms, and discourse markers.

Use of formulaic language makes learners sound more idiomatic and to some extent, more fluent (because these word chunks are produced together).
