On balance, economic globalization is a threat to the national interest of countries.

辩题浅析

Since the end of World War Il, the world has found itself on a path toward economic globalization — the integration of the global economy through foreign direct investment, finance, trade and international economic governance. Advocates of globalization have long defended the idea with claims that it will (and has) lifted millions out of poverty, cemented trade ties that will prevent war, facilitated access to resources, and contributed to the most efficient and low cost distribution of services.

Recently, however, newly elected leaders in have challenged globalization on the grounds that it it is a threat to the national interest of their respective states. These advocates argue that globalization has displaced jobs and undercut wages in the developed world, that it has facilitated the rise of imperial power, and that it has resulted in resource extraction and environmental degradation in many of the regions that globalization was intended to benefit.

This spring’s NSDA China debate resolution directs students to engage this ripe controversy by exploring the question of whether or the economic globalization is a threat to the national interests of countries, including countries in East Asia, North America, Africa, and Europe. In this way, the resolution asks debaters to start with the question of economic globalization and it enables them to tie their arguments to all parts of the globe, fully capturing the debate in the literature.

Sample Pro arguments include job displacement, wage loss, rich-poor gaps, environmental destruction, cultural infringement, threats to national security, the downsides of competition for global influence, and the diminishing power of the west in the world order. Sample Con arguments include world-wide poverty reduction, the benefits of integrating East Asia into the current global order, the world-wide distribution of new technologies, the overall benefits of economic growth, and the value of market economies.

Although the topic encourages debate on a variety of interconnected arguments, Pro and Con teams must start their argument with a connection to the advantages and disadvantages of economic globalization in order to ensure that both sides can be prepared with core set of arguments for any debate.
