I agree that class assignments that are handed in after the deadline should be given a lower grade. School, just like anything else in life is often times very competitive. Students are competing for the number one position and graduates are competing for jobs. So in order to level the playing field and keep things fair, if you hand in your assignment late, you should be penalized for it. 

Additionally, I think the stricter teachers are about deadlines, the more (猜词互动 )and hardworking their students will be. It keeps students on their toes and makes them more respectful of time management, which I believe is an important part of a student’s education.
