【Methodology】

It is a style of teaching where the learners at first are presented with a rule, e.g. a grammar rule and then they have to apply it to examples.

We can compare it with inductive learning where the examples are given first, and then learners have to find the rules (also known as discovery learning).

As for which is better; most experts agree that is depends on the rule being studied.

Deductive learning is the one favoured by most self-study grammar practice books.

Dialogue

【Methodology】

Dialogue is any text used in a classroom involving a (usually) two-way exchange of spoken language.

It also describes the activity of producing this text.

The reason why dialogues are so prominent in the language classroom is because they are most common ways that languages are used in real life.

Interesting fact: the earliest known ELT course book published in 1586 was called as “Familiar Dialogues”.
