"Play it by ear" means you aren"t going to make a firm plan, but will decide what to do as you go along.

“play it by ear”意思是没有做出确定的计划，而是走一步看一步，决定要做什么。

来源：原指音乐天赋高的人不用乐谱，仅凭听过的记忆就可弹奏乐曲，强调“即兴”。做事情即兴，也就是“见机行事”。
