Causative

【Grammar】

Causative is the structure that is sometimes given as the passive,e.g. “have something / get something done”.

“I had my computer repaired.”

It’s more common in spoken than in written English.

There is no need for learners to know the term “causative”.

Clause

【Grammar】

Complex sentence is a sentence that contains a main clause and a subordinate clause.

“This is the best explanation I can give you.”

There is a tendency for learners and teachers to think that using lots of complex sentences means “good English”. While using some complex sentences accurately is typical of advanced learners and native speakers, overuse of complex sentences sounds unnatural.

Teaching of complex sentences should include guidance on WHEN to use them as well as how they are formed.
