此题原封不动重现2013.7.22的大作文考题,看来老房子的问题是需要好好消化吸收的,另外类似的还有:

  • Many old buildings are protected by the law because they are part of a nation"s history. However, some people think they should be knocked down to make way for new ones because people need houses and offices. Do you agree or disagree?

  • Too much money is spent in maintaining and repairing old buildings. Some people think that they should be knocked down and give way to the modern buildings. To what extent do you or disagree?

  • 关于老房子的去留,这里简单整理下通常双方持有的理由。

    去:

年久失修(worn down)、占用土地资源(occupy precious land resources)、不符合现代发展(fail to keep up with the development)

    留:

是文化遗产(cultural relics)、是城市独特的象征(a symbol of unique culture)、增强凝聚力(enhance cohesion)、可以开发成旅游景区(developed into hot places of interest)

    大家把以上论点自由组合,言之有理,逻辑清晰,就可以是1篇不错的文章。

    范文分享

A large amount of public money is being invested in the maintenance of historic buildings in major cities. However, some people argue that the money should be used in the construction of urbanization. In my opinion, it is essential for us to protect those historic buildings.

The first reason comes to my mind when talking about protection of old buildings is that it helps citizens to develop a sense of orientation about the place in history. This is because historic buildings provide a physical link to the past and they are a significant building block in the flow of our culture though time. For example, a child visits a historic civic building to learn more about what it means to be a native of his or her hometown. Also, historic buildings are studied to tell us about the use of materials and resourceful solutions in everyday living.

Another point in favor of my opinion lies in that major cities should extinguish themselves from concrete jungle infused with skyscrapers, broad roads, apartment complex, office blocks through preserving old buildings. Due to the advent of high technology and exchanged information around the world, what features a cosmopolitan city should be characterized with are generally acknowledged, which causes the widespread similarity among those cities, lack of their own uniqueness. If there were no historic buildings, a city will finally become a common.

Opponents are, of course, reasonable to some extent. After all, new housing and road development can meet the rising needs of a growing population and vehicles. Meanwhile, many traditional buildings are worn down by the years without repair, occupy the precious resource, fail to synchronize with the development of the city. However, we can not afford to lose physical materials, ideas and skills, or we can only learn and study history and culture by videos and pictures. Let alone they could be developed into hot places of interest.

In sum, government should safeguard those ancient buildings for sake of the protection of cultural heritage. Only when it is costlier to keep up a building or a district should city planners consider redevelopment as an option.
