Take on the problem in a statistical point of view. If a problem most people are prone to, there must be something problematic in itself rather than in you. You can then very well leave it aside. Or you simply belong to the very rare type who would bother to take pains to crack it. Perhaps, some reflections of mine cast on it can be of avail to you.I can never differentiate between complement and compliment in spelling and I doubt I would ever do. I suppose, the failure lies, only in that I write too little. And that can be applied to most of the cases. After all, memorization as well as writing and speaking is more of repetitious contracting and extending of some muscle in brain. (Do pardon me for using such an unprofessional phrasing. )Otherwise etymology can help, sometimes a little, sometimes not at all. In the former case, what comes to my mind is ILLICIT and ELICIT. The two prefixes denote respectively negation and outwardness. The former invariably doubles the initial letter of stem. The latter seldom does if ever. One more example, stationary and stationery, I won't take them wrongly, only for that I have stationary state in physics, but never stationery. Presumably you're not in physics, so I'd recommend you to compare the doublet to ordinary and bakery. In the latter case, I will gladly nominate precede and proceed. I'd have no difficulty in distinguishing them in a text, particularly when they are dressed respectively in past participle and present participle. Yet I do hesitate at times when it comes to writing, I mean, whether it is preceed or it is precede. And it does muddle the water when I try to piece together the word with the help of its opposite: suc-ceed. You see, words are very naughty. They play trick on you when you're the least on alert.
