一、enlarge 多作及物动词。意思是“加大、放大、扩大” 。常用于面积、广度和范围的扩大，不能用于指重量、速度和时间。例如：
This photograph is too small, please enlarge it for me.这张照片太小，请帮我把它放大。
The hotel is being enlarged to accommodate more guests.这家宾馆正在扩建，以容纳更多的客人。
The successful investment enlarged his personal fortune.成功的投资扩大了他个人的财产。
二、expand 多作及物动词。意思是“扩大、加大、使膨胀” 。常用于面积或体积的“伸展” 。例如：
He expanded his short story into a novel.他把他的短故事扩写成了小说。
If water is heated, it will expand. 如果给水加热，水就会膨胀。

Did you spread butter on the bread? 你在面包上抹了黄油吗？
The city spreads for ten kilometers to the north.这座城市向北伸展了十千米。
He stood up and spread out his arms. 他站起来展开双臂。
四、stretch 作及物动词表示“拉长、绷大、伸展、延续（时间）、伸出（手）” 。作不及物动词表示“有伸缩性、伸懒腰” 。主要指由曲而直或由短而长的“伸展” 。例如：
The bird stretched its wings. 鸟儿展开翅膀。
They stretched the rope between the two posts.他们在两点之间拉了根绳子。
He stretched his arm above his head. 他把手伸过他的头。
She got out of bed and stretched. 她从床上起来，伸了个懒腰。
