TKT Glossary 新东方师训讲堂本篇词汇:

2.10. Preference

2.11. Request

2.12. Speculation

10

Preference

【Grammar】

Request is a speech function that is used to get people to do things, to persuade people or to ask for favours.

The request function is usually (not always) formed using MODAL verbs. Examples:

“Give me the phone, will you?”

“Would / can / could you give me the phone?”

“Would you mind giving me the phone?”

“I wonder if you’d mind giving me the phone?”

“I don’t suppose you’d mind giving me the phone, would you?”

These request sentences can be manipulated to add or remove “politeness” by using words like “possibly” and “please”.

There are many contexts suitable for teaching requests, e.g. polite telephone conversation.

12

Speculation

【Grammar】

Speculation is a common language function that involves guessing something based on clues that you have.

Speculation is usually formed with MODAL verbs (might – may – could) and words like (probably – possibly – likely – definitely).

Good contexts for teaching speculation are “choosing a holiday”  (this is good because it also involves preferences and agreeing).
