When it comes to anything related to China, Vietnamese have complicated and contradictory feeling. Let’s see:

China invaded Vietnam, forced Vietnamese to adopt Chinese culture => HATE

BUT at the same time: Chinese culture is similar to Vietnam, so Vietnamese feel close to Chinese, => LIKE

Chinese are scheming and multifaceted => HATE

BUT at the same time: Vietnamese admire this cunningness and want to be more like that => LIKE

Chinese moved to Vietnam, never wanted to assimilate, instead expected Vietnamese to accomodate them => HATE

BUT at the same time: Vietnamese admire Chinese resilience to cultural assimilation and always say we need to be more like that, especially Vietnamese overseas => LIKE

Chinese are insular and only help their own people in business => HATE

BUT at the same time: Vietnamese say we need to learn more from Chinese solidarity with each other => LIKE

Chinese fake everything => HATE

BUT at the same time: “OMG the Chinese are clever, anything they can do” => LIKE

Chinese are calculative => HATE

BUT at the same time: Vietnamese admire Chinese long vision and culture of strategy and think Vietnamese need to learn from that => LIKE

Vietnamese can have bad sterotypes of Chinese but Vietnamese do recognise Chinese good points as well. Personally I think the Chinese are a very clever group of people. I came to this conclusion after observing and researching their community in Vietnam and in other Southeast Asian countries. They are without a doubt one of the most enterprising and business minded cultures in the world. And I think not just me but this view is quite common amongst Vietnamese. If there is one single common thought that Vietnamese have of Chinese, even the extremely anti-China ones, it would be: the Chinese are clever.

Originally Answered: Do Vietnamese see Chinese as their enemies?

Personally I don’t see Chinese as enemies but for a lot of people around me, China is often regarded as a threat mostly due to negative betrayal of China on the news and social media. Vietnam fought against China for a long time in history, and thus Vietnamese people tend to perceive China as a constant threat rather than a friendly and helpful neighbor. Personally I don’t like nationalism, it makes us hate people we never meet just because they are not from where we are.

I’m going to be honest, this will break many hearts. But when Vietnamese make fun of everything related to China, its almost like hating themselves. I’ll explain why this is.

I’m a Vietnamese from Ho Chi Minh City, I grew up watching Chinese dramas but hating China. I hated every bit of China, calling Chinese people “Chinese dogs”. Basically I used to be one of those angry nationalists on YouTube or Facebook calling for the extermination of China. I REALLY HATED CHINESE, EVERYTHING CHINESE: products, food, anything halfway related to china I would hate.

I was 19 when I first went to China, I was sort of excited but also sort of afraid. I told myself I was afraid because I was going to be in a new place or something like that, but I was really fooling myself, I probably knew at the back of my head that this was going to happen.

I stepped foot in China and wandered around the city, it really felt EXACTLY LIKE HO CHI MINH CITY. The people look similar, the food looks similar, the people act similar, the way people walk and talk looks similar. Everything was similar.

When I went abroad to Australia, I can usually tell the difference between lets say a korean and a viet or a japanese and a viet or a indonesian and a viet. But no matter how hard I tried i couldn’t find a way to distinguish a viet and a Chinese. Our way of living is really that similar!

I faced a crisis, i realized by hating on China so much I was really hating on Vietnam as well.

This will probably make people mad, and make others want to kill me, but really. The culture difference between VN and CN is basically the difference between two Chinese provinces like Bejing or Guangzhou, Im dead serious.

I really wanted to hate China, I really wanted to continue holding my grudge for the thousand year occupation of my country: The Bac Thuoc. But I simply couldn’t, everything was so similar, down to food, culture, clothing, way of life.

I am now of the opinion that most of Vietnamese culture is originally Chinese in origin, and thus I really can’t hate China. I’m not kidding if Vietnam spoke cantonese we’d basically be a part of China, South China and Vietnam are really really similar.

So I say, most Vietnamese HATE HATE China, but, I can no longer do so, because hating Chinese culture is like hating Vietnam. It sort of halfway broke my heart when I realized this.

Of course we do. It’s impossible not to, given our history.

The Vietnamese hate Chinese people in the same way that the Nepalis hate The Indians, or all the Eastern Europeans-Russians. It’s a fact. We, the weak and the marginalised hate the bully. It’s how it is.

this sort of love-hate relationship is a very common phenomenon all around the globe. The submissive one absorbed too much cultural value and philosophical ideals from the provocateur that they feel threatened of losing their identity. The Vietnamese try incessantly to prove that they are unique and so much different from the Chinese, and by unique and different, what they are truly telling is the claim of their indepence, historically and culturally. But of course they can’t. Vietnam resembles a great deal of China. The fact is too cruel to comprehend, let alone recognize it as an essential part of national identity design. and the more we strive to shrug it off, the more of that hatred is haboured in the society.

Yet we are heavily influenced, it is impossible to disconnect ourselves and refute all of what helped make us who we are. We aspire the enormous collection of Chinese civilization and study them wholeheartedly, as if we are rediscovering ourselves. a Vietnamese may find Chinese philosophy much more agreeable than Western ideals precisely because it relates more to the values and traditions that she holds and beholds. The same thing happened in other social activities, such as religion practice or the taste in art and fashioN (though given by the exponential popularity of American culture, this is changing)

well then, so of course we hate the Chinese, at the same time we get intrigued and secretly admire them
