3Integrated coherent electro-optics

Controlling light with microwave electrical signals plays a paramount role in a wide range of applications from telecommunication to emerging quantum technologies. Despite the existence of bulk electro-optic modulators for many decades and recent advances in integrate photonics with Si and III-V materials, the direct interaction strength between light and microwave is still extremely weak which severely limits applications. In this talk, I will show you that strong and direct interaction between microwave and light can be achieved on an integrated photonic platform that is robust and scalable. I will introduce our very recent breakthrough on the development of an ultralow loss electro-optics platform using monolithically integrated lithium niobate nanowaveguides. This novel platform possesses three key ingredients that have not coexisted before: 1) Large and linear electro-optic susceptibility (χ2). 2) Efficient co-localization of microwave and light. 3) Extremely low optical loss. I will highlight through experimental progresses in low-Vp modulator, quantum coherent microwave-to-photon interface and microwave driven multi-wavelength oscillator that this unique combination of properties completely shifts the existing paradigm of microwave-optical interfaces and is producing a burst of opportunities for novel electro-optic devices.

4Covariant chiral perturbation theory: recent applications to one-baryon sector and heavy-light systems

I first give a brief review of covariant chiral perturbation theory (ChPT): the main issue - various solutions and relation to other popular methods like lattice QCD.  Then a covariant baryon ChPT with explicit delta degrees of freedom will be applied to study elastic pion-nucleon scattering up to the leading one-loop order. Phase shifts given by the recent analysis of Roy-Steiner equations are well described and the involved low-energy constants are determined. Application of covariant ChPT to a heavy-light system, in particular, interactions between charmed D mesons and Goldstone bosons will be also discussed. In combination with unitarization approach proposed in previous literature we calculate the S-wave scattering lengths and compare them to the ones of lattice QCD. In the end, I conclude with some considerations on what possible new knowledge can be gained using covariant ChPT.

5Higgs/amplitude mode and non-equilibrium of strongly interacting Fermi gases

He built a new 23Na-6Li experimental setup in Bonn and his current research is focusing on ultra-cold Fermi gases experiment, especially on excitation and non-equilibrium dynamics of strongly interacting Fermionic superfluid under external driving. With a fast population transfer, the interacton cross the Feshbach resonances between the different spin components is rapidly quenched, which induces non-equilibrium dynamics beyond prediction of BCS theory.

6New Insights on Low Energy pi N Scattering Amplitudes

The S- and P-wave phase shifts of low-energy pion-nucleon scatterings are analysed using Peking University representation, in which they are decomposed into various terms contributing either from poles or branch cuts. We estimate the left-hand cut contributions with the help of tree-level perturbative amplitudes derived in relativistic baryon chiral perturbation theory up to O(p^2). It is found that in S11 and P11 channels, contributions from known resonances and cuts are far from enough to saturate experimental phase shift data – strongly indicating contributions from low lying poles undiscovered before, and we fully explore possible physics behind including possible new hidden pole positions. On the other side, no serious disagreements are observed in the other channels.

7Higgs-Anomaly Mediation: a simple setup with interesting phenomena and flavor safety

We consider a simple setup, called Higgs-Anomaly mediation, where all the multiplets in the MSSM except for the Higgs multiplets are sequestered from SUSY breaking, but the Higgs multiplets couple to through Planck-suppressed operators. In this setup, the splitting mass spectra of squarks and sleptons are generated through radiative corrections: anomaly mediation and a kind of Higgs mediation. Despite the stop masses greater than order 10 TeV favored by the measured mass of the Higgs boson, sfermions in first two generations can be sufficiently light to be searched for and tested in the LHC, and affect low energy phenomena in ground-based experiments. There are viable regions explaining muon g-2 anomaly, and bottom-tau and top-bottom-tau Yukawa unifications. These regions are testable from the viewpoint of collider experiments. Surprisingly, despite the splitting mass spectra, there are suppressed flavor-violating processes. In fact, the contribution to epsilon_K is constrained most severely. However, we show that  this contribution is at most around 20% of the experimental value and is safely within the theoretical uncertainty of the SM.

8追踪探测双中子星系统并合产生的引力波和光

2015年11月,人类第一次探测到引力波,直接验证了爱因斯坦100年前提出的广义相对论,也开始了引力波天文学的第一步。2017年物理学诺贝尔奖被授予三位这个领域里的先驱以表彰他们在引力波的成功探测中所起的决定性作用。第一次和随后三次探测到的都是由双黑洞并合产生的引力波。2017年,美国的地面引力波探测器LIGO和意大利的Virgo同时运作,而在2017年8月第一次合力探测到了期待已久的由双中子星并合而产生的电磁波辐射也被陆续探到,其结果震撼了整个天文界。

作为LIGO引力波国际合作团队成员,我的小组直接参与了LIGO-Virgo三个探测器的引力波快速在线探测与发现。在这个科普演讲里,我会先简介引力波探测的概况和历史,然后着重讨论这次双中子星并合的引力波探测过程,以及对其电磁波对应体的追踪,并讨论对未来第三代引力波探测器的展望。
