【中国青年网|美国这是怎么了?,到处充斥矛盾对抗】Recently,fourformerpresidentsoftheU.S.,includingBarackObama,GeorgeW.Bush,BillClintonandJimmyCarter,successivelymadestatementsaboutthedeathofGeorgeFloyd,expressingtheirdenouncementofracialdiscriminationandsympathyforthevictimandhisfamily,andcallingforexamining“ourtragicfailures”andrestoringthe“justiceofthecountry”.Noneofthosefourformerpresidents,nomatterthedemocratsorrepublicans,madeexcusefororsupporttheTrumpadministration.
ItisrareinAmericanhistorythatseveralformerpresidentscriticizeacurrentadministrationatthesametime,andthisrevealsthecontradictionsandconflictsofAmericansociety,asocietyfullofprotests,demonstrations,violentconflicts,polarization,andxenophobia.WhatiswrongwiththeU.S.?Isthissupposedtobethestatusoftheonlysuperpowerintheworld?Definitelynot.
Thedeep-rootedracialdiscriminationisunderminingthefoundationoftheU.S.RecentmonthssawtheongoingprotestsanddemonstrationtriggeredbythedeathofGeorgeFloyd,anAfricanAmericanwhodiedafterawhitepoliceofficerheldakneeagainsthisneck,whichhavespreadtomorethan650citiesinAmericaandevendozensofcountriesacrosstheworld,includingBritain,Germany,FranceandCanada.Thiswaveofprotestshasbecomethemostwidespreadoneintheworld.Protestorsonthestreetsholdhighsignssaying“Ican’tbreathe”,“Blacklivesmatter”,“Nojustice,nopeace”andsoon,makingexplicitthechronicproblemoftheU.S.—racialdiscrimination—tothewholeworld.
Aftermorethan400yearsofstruggle,itseemsthatblackpeoplenowenjoythesamepoliticalrightsaswhitepeople.However,duetothehugegapintermsofeducationandwealth,blackpeoplehavealwaysbeentreatedunfairly.AccordingtoareportoftheBrookingsInstitutionreleasedinFebruarythisyear,at$171,000,thenetworthofatypicalwhitefamilyisnearlytentimesgreaterthanthatofablackfamily($17,150)in2016.AccordingtothestatisticsoftheU.S.CentersofDiseaseControlandPrevention,nearly23%ofreportedCovid-19deathsintheU.S.areAfricanAmericanasofMay20,eventhoughblackpeoplemakeuproughly13%oftheU.S.population.AccordingtothedatareleasedbytheNewYorkTimesonMay28,from2013through2019,atleastonethousandpeoplediedofpoliceviolenceeachyear,amongwhichblackpeopleaccountforthemajority.
Itisworthyofnoticethatracialdiscriminationisnotonlyagainstblackpeople,sinceAsianAmericans,Latinosandotherpeopleofcolorareattheendofthepeckingorder.RacialdiscriminationhasbecometheseriouswoundinAmericansociety,leadingtoaseriesofcontradictionsandconflictsthatisgraduallyunderminingthefoundationoftheU.S.asanation.
