Human memory is complex.
The more we grow older,
the more we forget usually.
Some memories though come back to us
crystal clear while they were banished from
our mind for years. Traumatic experiences
for example, can come back in jus
t a flash once we have hit a certain age.
The main character in this story,
an old man, experiences just that right when
he says goodbye to one of his old friends.
After his friend left, he feels very much unlike himself,
and wonders why. Just then a fly lands in
his inkpot and starts to battle for its’ life.
The old man helps the fly first,
only to throw another splash of in on it right after
it cleaned itself. What does the fly teach the old man?
Why does the old man persist in throwing ink on it?

1. " Y'ARE very snugin here," pipedold Mr. Woodifield to his formerboss, and now best friend. It was time for him to be off. But he did not want to go. Since he had retired, the wife and the girls kept him in the house every day of the week except Tuesday. On Tuesday he was allowed to go outside. Though what he did there the wife and girls did not know, luckily.

2. " Yes, it's comfortable enough," agreed the boss; he liked to have it admired, especially by his friend old Woodifield." His hands began to tremble. “Poor old chap, he's on his last pins”, thought the boss. And, feeling kindly, he said jokingly: "I tell you what. 3. Old Woodifield's mouth fell open at the sight of it. " It's whisky, ain't it?" Whisky it was. “They won't let me touch it at home…" “Drink it down.” the boss said. “It'll do you good.” True, it warmed mr. Woodifield like it always had—he remembered. Then the old man brightenedwonderfully and relaxed. “I guess it’s ok to forget things sometimes”, he said. The boss saw the old fellow out when he finished his whiskey. Woodifield was gone.

6. At that moment the boss noticed that a fly had fallen into his inkpot, and was trying desperately to climb out again. Help! help! said those struggling legs. But the sides of the inkpot were wet and slippery; it fell back again and began to swim. The boss took up a pen, picked the fly out of the ink, and shook it on to a piece of paper. For a fraction of a secondit lay still. Then the front legs waved, took hold, and, pulling its small body up, it began cleaning the ink from its wings.

7. Then there was a pause, while the fly, seeming to stand on the tipsof its toes, started to clean itself rigorously. After a short while, it tried to expandfirst one wing and then the other. It succeeded! I The horrible danger was over; it had escaped; it was soon ready for life again. But just then the boss had an idea. He plungedhis pen back into the ink, and dropped a large amount of ink back on the poor fly.

8. The little fellow seemed absolutely cowed, afraid to move because of what would happen next. But then it dragged itself forward. The front legs waved and, more slowly this time, the task of cleaning himself began from the beginning. “He's a pluckylittle devil”, thought the boss, and he felt a real admiration for the fly's courage. That was the way to tacklethings; that was the right spirit. Never say die; it was only a question of ... But the fly had again finished its laborioustask, and the boss was just in time to drop more ink on the new-cleaned body.分页标题

9. What about it this time? A painful moment of suspensefollowed. But behold, the front legs were again waving; the boss felt a rush of relief.He leaned over the fly and said to it tenderly, " You artfullittle creature…!” The boss decided that this time should be the last. It was. He dropped the last blot of ink fell on the fly. It did not even make an effort anymore to clean itself. “Come on,” said the boss “Look sharp!”. Nothing happened. The fly was dead. The boss threw the corpse into the rubbish bin.

朋友曾问我，人生是什么？认真思考过后，我忽然发现我回答不了这个问题。人生一世，草木一秋，哪怕到终了，人们总会坚守自己最后那一星半点的乐趣的。如同树木不舍最后一片黄叶一样。
上世纪初英国最著名的短篇小说家Katherine Mansfield在其《苍蝇》一文中对生命有着比较形象的描述。并对人性潜在的暴力意识做了些微观的讽喻般的展示。主人公“老板”对待陷入墨海中困厄的苍蝇的态度，难道不像上苍戏弄人类那样吗？
一只不幸的苍蝇，无意中跌入宽口墨水瓶中，它拼尽全力艰难地向上攀爬，却绝望地发现墨水瓶边缘又湿又滑。老板发现了它，用钢笔把它挑了出来，放到吸墨纸上。九死一生的苍蝇精疲力尽地躺在慢慢洇开的墨水中，艰难地清理自己的身子，试图拍打掉两只翅膀上的墨水。可是，就在它缓过劲来准备飞离时，主宰它生命的老板却将一滴墨水再次滴落到它的头顶，厄运又从天而降。在灭顶之灾时，苍蝇又开始了挣扎，振着虚弱的翅膀，挥舞着疲惫的前腿为生命的尊严再次抗争着，就连决定其命运的老板也不得不佩服其勇气。老板却不因此而心生怜悯，在苍蝇再次勉强弄干身体上的墨水时，再度将一滴致命的墨水滴落下去，怀着复杂的心情观察着小生灵在漆黑的汪洋大海中绝望地挣扎着，直到生命的终止。
把视点放大一千倍，老板是不是与这只苍蝇有着相似之处？在他玩弄那只可怜的苍蝇前六年，他也曾经历了一场生离死别的绝望。老板的儿子英俊聪慧，子承父业，在生意场上如鱼得水。公司的业务又兴旺发达。他也习惯了接受别人羡慕的眼光和赞赏的话语。对老板来说，这个独子似乎就是他人生的全部。
可是厄运就像那只倒霉的苍蝇那样突然降临到他们的头上。战争爆发了，他的儿子和邻居伍德菲尔德的儿子都应征入伍了。有一天，仆人递过来一份电报：“Deeply regret to inform you …” 。天旋地转，世界的末日竟然就这样无声无息地到来了。六年来，老板经历了炼狱般的折磨，说过最多的句子就是“我的儿子！” ，试图用祥林嫂般简单重复的呻吟来舔平受伤的心。日复一日，年复一年地盯着桌子上玻璃板下那张发黄的照片。坚毅英俊，神情严肃，一身军装容光焕发。似乎儿子从来没有离开过他，或只是安静地躺在某个地方。

那天老伍德跛着腿来到老板的公司艳羡着老板室内豪华的陈设和高档的家具。老板也喜欢在他面前炫耀。论年龄，他比老伍德大好几岁，论身体他结实硬朗，脸色红润，自己的生意仍然兴隆着。而可怜的老伍德中风后一直被老婆和女儿们关在家里只有每个星期二才放他出来溜达一会儿。在这个放风的机会中，他最喜欢去的就是老板那儿。陷在老板的沙发中，抽根老板的雪茄，或许老板兴致来了，偷偷地赏他一口好酒，再恋恋不舍地回到自己的家中继续被囚禁着。
这天，他又在老板那儿听着他炫富，唾沫纷飞之时，兴致来了的老板从柜子里拿出一瓶酒，旋转着标签说：“温莎堡珍藏的精品威士忌！怎么样，咱哥俩来上一杯？不让你家的大小娘儿们知道就是了。 ”
酒鬼老伍德无比惊讶，两眼瞪得溜圆放光。这或许就是老板想要见到的表情吧。他慷慨地倒了两杯酒，递出一杯给老酒鬼，把自己的那杯一昂脖就干了，然后随意地擦擦胡子得意地望着老伙计。另一个酒鬼颤抖地接过佳酿，在老板的鼓励下，将酒倒入口中，却不舍得咽下去。百感交集，幸福就在这一口中哇！酒下肚后，全身热烘烘的，酒精如血流般滋润了老家伙迟钝的大脑，思维异常活跃，忽然想起了临出门时想对老板说的事。
“哥们，上周我女儿去了一趟比利时，给我儿子上坟，碰巧也看到了你儿子的坟。公墓管理得不错，像花园一样” 。没心没肺的老伍德，哪壶不开提哪壶。在酒精的刺激下唾沫乱溅，大声囔囔着一些不上斤两的往事。
可对老板来说，不谛被人用尖刀刺入了受伤的心。或者说就像那只可怜的已被捞上墨水瓶的苍蝇，再度被兜头一倾致命的墨水。任凭酒友絮絮叨叨，他不知是怎么应付的。老酒鬼却毫不知情。送走老伍德后，老板开始品味造化的无情，如同那只可怜的苍蝇，陷入了无止境的痛苦深渊之中。
什么是人生？恐怕只有曼斯菲尔德笔下的佳酿威士忌知道。
